Kanturk Arts Festivals’ Flash Fiction Long List 2020
So, if you’ve made it this far, congratulations – below you will find the titles only of our long list selection of 50 stories.
Our judge for 2020 Breda Joy who will deliberate on the long-listed stories and decide on a shortlist of 20 stories and will have the unenviable job of deciding which of these stories will be awarded first, second and third prizes!
Please note that judge is still considering the selected stories blind. By all means, shout for joy, dance a jig and celebrate your inclusion in the long-list (and we encourage this) but please don’t identify yourself as the author of a specific story – not yet

When did he ask?
The Short List will be published on our website in the beginning of March. The winners will be notified by email. The winners will be announced at the opening of the Kanturk Arts Festival on Friday 13th March 2020.
This years’ judge is Breda Joy
Breda Joy is a journalist and writer from Killarney, County Kerry. She is the author of a novel, Eat the Moon (Poolbeg Press, 2018) and three books of non-fiction, Brian Crowley: Against the Odds, A Biography (Brandon Press, 1996); Hidden Kerry, The Keys to the Kingdom (Mercier Press, 2014), and The Wit & Wisdom of Kerry (Mercier Press, 2015).
Her second novel, Under a Skellig Sky, will be published by Poolbeg Press this summer.
A graduate of the M. Phil. in Creative Writing Programme (2010/2011) at Trinity College Dublin, she has had poetry published in literary journals including The Stony Thursday Book, Icarus and the Cork Literary Review.
She was a finalist in the 2016 GreenBean Novel Fair at the Irish Writers’ Centre, Dublin. She has been short listed for the Francis MacManus Short Story Competition (2011); long listed for the RTE Guide Penguin Ireland Short Story (2012); a winner in the inaugural, Trócaire/Poetry Ireland Award (2012), and a winner in the Kerry County County Council One Act Play Competition (2005).
A winner in the ESB National Media Awards (1997), she has worked as a regional journalist with Kerry’s Eye and The Kerryman/Corkman newspapers in Killarney and Macroom, as well as with the Leader Group in Melbourne
